To help promote sports and education in Mexico, Disney organized the first Copa Star Wars football (soccer) tournament! Translated to English, the Star Wars Cup is geared towards boys and girls between ages 10 and 12. About 800 students from 470 schools will participate in the tournament and each team will compete from May 17 through Jun 8 in various cities across Mexico. The remaining three teams will be honored with titles “Jedi Apprentice” (third place), “Jedi Knight” (second place), and “Jedi Master” (first place).

“Con la ‘Copa Star Wars 2014′ lo que queremos es llevarles un poquito del conocimiento de estas películas a los niños, porque estamos conscientes de que conocen este universo, pero no a profundidad como los verdaderos fans, que ya son más grandes. “
“With the ‘Star Wars Cup 2014′ we want to bring a bit of knowledge of these films to children, because we are aware that they know this universe, but not as much as the older and true fans,” said Eduardo Sánchez, senior marketing manager for The Walt Disney Company Mexico.
The venues for the Copa Star Wars 2014 tournament include:
- Federal District (Mexico City): Sunday, May 18, at the sports grounds CECAP.
- Puebla : May 17 and 18 at the Colegio Benavente.
- Monterrey : May 24 and 25 in Prepa TEC Eugenio Garza La Guera.
- Guadalajara : May 24 and 25 at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey Campus Guadalajara.
- Mérida : May 31 and June 1 in the Nation Institute.
- Cancun : June 7 at the Iberostar and the epic final held on June 8 at the same venue.
With the FIFA World Cup 2014 only a few weeks away, four lucky members of the winning team will also win a trip to the highly anticipated event in Brazil.
Star Wars and football also had an encounter with each other earlier this year when Visa Card Brazil released a new campaign featuring a team of stormtroopers and C-3PO to promote the World Cup.
As a fan of Star Wars and football, I can’t wait for the World Cup to kick off on Thursday, June 12! To follow my tweets on the event, I set up a new Twitter account: meshgeroya (the Mandalorian word for “the beautiful game”). Also, stay tuned for a Star Wars Blog post that combines my two favorite things…
