Today’s spotlight is on Kevin Tiernan! For the Art Awakens Program, Kevin designed a stunning tribute to Finn’s passage, a character who goes from Stormtrooper to hero in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. (Find the original art on the Star Wars Tumblr and a larger version on DeviantArt.)
Tell us about yourself.
I’m Kevin Tiernan and I’m in love with the art of music, comics and movies. I’ve been playing in bands since I was a kid, and music is what introduced me to graphic design. After purchasing incredibly designed records from Mondo, and seeing Guardians of the Galaxy, I started getting involved with the amazing fan art community.
When and how did you become a Star Wars fan?
I was born in 1990, so I grew up in that “in-between” period. But I have always loved the original trilogy and I was still pretty young when the prequels began. There was a chrome Star Wars VHS box set that I was obsessed with. I had the toys and the Millennium Falcon playset was my favorite. Drawing Star Wars characters was a great deal of fun, and the films pushed me to be more imaginative and creative.
What tools do you use to create your art?
I started out with a few rounds of sketching before bringing the design into Adobe Illustrator.
What is your favorite Star Wars piece that you have created and why are you fond of it?
I had a blast creating all of my entries for the Art Awakens contest. “Finn’s Journey” was an interesting piece to work on. When characters switch and balance their allegiances, it always makes for great storytelling. I’m looking forward to seeing where Finn and John Boyega will be by the end of the film. Also, I love everything about Gallery 1988.
What’s the best and most difficult thing about being an artist?
One of the most difficult things is breaking through to get yourself out there. But it’s awesome meeting new, talented people.
Are you looking forward to the future Star Wars films? After watching the trailer(s) for The Force Awakens, what are your hopes or worries?
Absolutely! I think J.J. Abrams and company are doing a fantastic job of honoring the spirit of the original trilogy. I’ll be there on opening night for sure, eating a large tub of buttered popcorn. It’s great that a whole new generation has a chance to visit this universe and take part in the Star Wars legacy. It seems like Luke Skywalker’s role in the film will be particularly interesting.
Any final thoughts?
Thank you so much, Kevin, for sharing your wonderful art with us! Keep up the fantastic work, and may the Force be with you!
