Today’s spotlight is on KikaKatTIOI, also known as Kika!

Tell us about yourself.

I’m a 19 year old girl attending college in California and majoring in animation. I’ve been a fan of film and television since I was little, especially in animated movies and shows. I’m into several different fandoms which are too many to count, but I do make time for original stuff, like working on developing my own characters and stories. Surprisingly, I’m an athlete as well as a tree climber which becomes handy when learning to draw anatomy of people. I’m a huge Depa Billaba fan, and my Star Wars Skype group can back me up on this.

When and how did you become a Star Wars fan?

I’ll be honest, I got into Star Wars after watching the first episode of Star Wars Rebels. I remember my dad showing me A New Hope when I was about ten, but I never got invested into it until now. I wish I got into it sooner because the fanbase is so crazy and awesome. So as I waited for the next episode of Rebels, I did catch up on watching all the movies and Star Wars: The Clone Wars and read the new canon novels and comics. I even attended Star Wars Celebration this year and cosplayed as Depa Billaba, who is my favorite Star Wars character of all time. Now that I’m in my first year of college, I have made several friends who I can enjoy Star Wars with and we plan to go to the opening night of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

What tools do you use to create your art?

I use a lot of traditional tools, like Copic markers and Micron pens because they’re easy to take on the go and draw. But when I have time, at home I sit down and use Photoshop or Corel Painter.

What is your favorite Star Wars piece that you have created and why are you fond of it?

If we’re going for quality I would say a picture I did on Corel of “Kasmir and Caleb” from the Kanan comic series, because not only do I love how it turned out, but those two are boss together. But if we’re going for favorites, it would be my most recent full-on Corel drawing of Depa Billaba because Depa is the best Jedi ever (in my opinion).

What’s the best and most difficult thing about being an artist?

Well, I guess the hardest thing for me would be the consistency, especially since I want to be a storyboard artist. It’s hard to draw a character, and then, in the next slide try not to make them look like a completely different person. Also, it’s the little time I have to do full-on drawings on computer software–not that I’m complaining, since I love to draw on paper too.

Star Wars Rebels is currently in its second season. What are your thoughts? How do you think the series will progress?

Where do I begin? Well, since watching the season two premiere at Celebration, it’s been news after news after news. I mean, I love all the updates the creators are giving us, but I just want to see the rest of season two as soon as possible. I think, even though with some restrictions, that the season is going to get dark, but in a way, that will stay enjoyable for all ages. I’m really excited to see backgrounds of characters explored more, especially Zeb because the purple beef is my favorite character within the Rebels show and needs more love.

Are you looking forward to the future Star Wars films? After watching the trailer(s) for The Force Awakens, what are your hopes or worries?

I’m so excited for the new trilogy of Star Wars to come. I’ve been waiting since day one of seeing BB-8 roll across the screen. I’m hoping to see if they integrate something from the expanded universe, such as the novels and shows, into the big screen (crossing fingers for Mandos). I don’t know if there is anything to worry about. I can’t really make assumptions until I see the movie.

How else do you express your love for Star Wars (cosplay, fanfiction, etc.)?

Well, earlier I said I cosplayed as Depa Billaba and I’ll probably end up going as her for Halloween. I want to try to go to Disneyland when Season of the Force begins. As for the little things, I’m also a fan fiction writer. Currently, I’m working on my first Star Wars fan fic, called “Waited on a Second Chance”, which is an alternate universe of Depa Billaba had she survived Order 66 (because I’m in denial about her death). Along with that, I do dedication videos or AMVs (anime music video). I do mostly animash (animash is a video that includes more than one animated film), but currently, I vid Ninja Turtles and Star Wars Rebels. I’m about to finish a new Rebels video soon, so keep an eye out for that one.

Any final thoughts?

I want to say thank you for doing artists segments like these. It feels great to be admired for the little things, like fan art. You can find any of my work on DeviantArt, Tumblr, YouTube, and I’m always under KikaKatTIOI. Also, cats are great, never be afraid to swing a lightsaber in public, good luck to the sanity of the Rebels fans out there, and may the Force be with you!

floral-dividerThank you so much for sharing your art with us, Kika! Wishing you the best of luck in college as you continue to study animation, and may the Force be with you!
