Fans of the popular Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels will be getting a heavy dose of Mandalorians in the next brand new episode. The series returned this past week with the debut of Princess Leia Organa, and now, the rebels have three new cruisers to continue the fight against the Empire.
There’s a bit of a problem, though. To get the growing Phoenix Squadron from one location to the next, the rebels need new hyperspace routes, especially as the Empire closes in. The Ghost crew manage to find a new shortcut, but that leads them close to the Concord Dawn system. In order to get access, the rebels must first gain permission from the leader of Concord Dawn, a Mandalorian protector named Fenn Rau (Kevin McKidd). The task, of course, proves more challenging than expected.
“She’s one I know the fans will be excited about as soon as I say this, but she’s Mandalorian,” said executive producer and supervising director Dave Filoni back when Sabine was first introduced months before the series started.
As soon as she was introduced to the fans, many theorized that she was related to Satine Kryze, given the similarity in names. When asked whether there was anything to be extrapolated from the similarity back in March 2014 during an IGN interview, Filoni said, “So many people would [love that], but there really isn’t any correlation. I mean, maybe I shouldn’t debunk that stuff now, but I would hate for someone to have months of getting their hopes up and then be mad at me when things don’t work out the way that they’ve been imagining it for months. But there really isn’t a connection between Satine and Sabine.”
Who are Sabine’s parents, though? Since then, fans have looked at Rook Kast, a character who appeared in the Son of Dathomir comic book series. Not only does Sabine look like her, but they also share similar Mandalorian armor designs.
Regardless if their identities are unveiled or not, it’s going to be exciting seeing Sabine taking a more prominent role in the next episode. It’s also a real treat hearing Kevin McKidd voice Fenn Rau.
“That character will have a cool presence in the show and in the show’s future,” said Freddie Prinze, Jr., when he vaguely spoke about the new Mandalorian character in an interview with Collider Jedi Council back in late October 2015. “The actor playing the role is … highly capable, and if he wasn’t highly capable, that character would be a one-off instead of a plan for the future.”
Mandalorians are a favored culture in the fan community, and given how we never got to see the Siege of Mandalore (as Rex had originally mentioned at the beginning of season two), we’re all eagerly looking forward to seeing new Mandalorian characters and action on the screen.
“The Protector of Concord Dawn” airs on Wednesday, January 27, at 9:00PM EST on Disney XD.
