Embark on New Adventures with the Freemakers Starting on June 20

A new kind of family will be making its debut on the small screen later this summer! Taking place between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the JediLEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures will feature a trio of sibling scavengers who scour the galaxy for useful parts to build vehicles based on their own designs. Things won’t continue to be that simple, however, when the youngest of the family discovers an ancient artifact with a powerful connection to the Force–a Kyber Saber.

“With The Freemaker Adventures we are thrilled to bring all-new stories to life that could only be realized in the LEGO Star Wars universe,” said Carrie Beck, vice president, animation development at Lucasfilm when the series was first announced back in February. “We are embarking on an unprecedented collaboration that will allow us to extend the narrative experience of the Star Wars saga with the same playful spirit that’s always made LEGO Star Wars so much fun to watch. We are so thankful to have such great partners in the LEGO Group, Disney XD, and series developers Bill Motz and Bob Roth.”

So who makes up the Freemaker family? There’s Rowan, a 12-year-old Force sensitive with a thirst for adventure, voiced by Nicolas Cantu. Rowan’s older sister, Kordi, is voiced by Vanessa Lengies (Glee) and she’s the brains of the operation. Voiced by Eugene Byrd (Arrow), there’s the charming older brother, Zander, who also happens to be an ace pilot. The family also includes Lucasfilm’s Matthew Wood as the lovable and hilarious R0-GR, also known as Roger, a refurbished Clone Wars battle droid.

What makes this show so exciting for me is the fact that it focuses on new characters, especially during a time that was dominated by the characters from the original trilogy. Here’s a new family with a Force sensitive kid existing between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. As a fan of new stories and the LEGO Star Wars franchise, it’s fun seeing these two being mixed together, especially for young children looking to enjoy something familiar yet new during the summer.

The team will also befriend a Jedi survivor called Naare, as originally seen in the announcement trailer, who will help them search for the missing pieces of the Kyber Saber. As pointed out by a TWG contributor in past conversations, we haven’t seen female Jedi survive past Order 66. Ahsoka Tano doesn’t identify as a Jedi, so she doesn’t exactly count. That said, it’ll be fascinating to see this new character interact with another Force sensitive being during a time when Luke Skywalker is out there fighting against the Empire.

Finally, I’m not interested in the question everyone’s been asking, “Is it canon or not canon?” None of that matters to me. What matters is that it turns out to be a fun, hilarious, and exciting adventure!

LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures will premiere on Monday, June 20, at 10 AM EST on Disney XD and a new episode will debut each day through Thursday, June 23. Keep a close eye on the Disney XD schedule to find out when the episodes may repeat later throughout the day or the week.
