Review: Star Wars ABC-3PO: Alphabet Book

Experience the ABC’s like never before
With galactic friends who are hardly a bore.
From Ackbar to Zeb, this nice little primer
Will teach you and make you an excellent rhymer.
So, Padawans, prepare, get ready, get set
To learn the ways of the Force—and the alphabet!

I love children’s books, especially when they’re inspired by Star Wars. Star Wars ABC-3PO: Alphabet Book by Calliope Glass and Caitlin Kennedy is all kinds of fun, since it includes rhymes as well as beautiful illustrations by Katie Cook. It’s the perfect daytime activity as well as the perfect bedtime story to read to younger children.

Since it’s aimed at children in preschool and kindergarten, some of the words in the passages are above the understanding of smaller children (e.g. begrudgingly, brooded, underestimate), but it’s still a gem to have in the mix. The rhyming makes it fun to read out loud to yourself or even to a small audience, like at a book reading.

I also really enjoyed the variety of characters that were used, like Ezra, Zeb, and Chopper from Star Wars Rebels. My one minor complaint is that “A” was used for Ackbar and not Ahsoka! Having her would have added another girl into the mix, since only Leia and Rey were used in the alphabet. Unfortunately, there is no Padmé Amidala. Ahsoka’s presence would have also included Star Wars: The Clone Wars into the mix, since there were no other original characters from that animated series in the book.

Overall, it’s a charming children’s book (that also includes Aurebesh!) for Star Wars families. It even inspired me to summarize my recommendation of it with my own rhyming:

This book by Calliope Glass and Caitlin Kennedy is all kinds of adorable and cute.
It has characters from the prequels, old trilogy, sequels, and Star Wars Rebels to boot.
Each page has illustrations by the lovely and talented Katie Cook.
With such beautiful and vivid artwork, it is well worth the look.
Little younglings get to learn their ABCs and more.
So don’t hesitate to buy this and enhance the lore.

Star Wars ABC-3PO: Alphabet Book is available for purchase on Amazon and your local bookstore.

Many thanks to Disney-Lucasfilm Press, an imprint of Disney Publishing Worldwide, for providing a review copy. That said, this review is an honest assessment of the product.
