It’s September, so that means that the season three of Star Wars Rebels is just around the corner! To prepare for the big premiere event, the Disney XD Star Wars Rebels website has been updated to include the season three key art, new characters photos, and character descriptions.
“Ezra’s strength in the Force continues to grow, but so does his recklessness. After the confrontation with Darth Vader on Malachor, Ezra secretly worries if he is powerful enough to defeat the dark side. Now 17 years old, he becomes more daring as the rebel missions become more dangerous. He is rising in status in the Rebellion, and gaining more responsibility.”
The most important piece of information in this character blurb about Ezra is that he’s 17 years old now. In Spark of Rebellion, he started out as a 14-year-old orphan, and now, three years later, he’s gaining more recognition in the Rebel Alliance and climbing in status. His age also tells us more about the timeline and when the series is taking place. Because of his appearance, fans assumed that we were significantly closer to the events of A New Hope, but his age tells us that we’re two years away from that point in time.
“Now freed from the dark depths of Malachor, Maul is running amuck in the galaxy. Driven by a decades-long thirst for vengeance that risks clouding his sanity, the restless former Sith Lord hopes to heal old wounds by completing a task he should have done years ago. Though Maul has found that the galaxy has changed much during his exile, the dark side trickster know where a few secrets are buried.”
Maul, first and foremost, seeks revenge against those who have wronged him. Various people, like Sidious and Obi-Wan Kenobi, are on his personal hit list, and some have pointed out keywords in the description (“old wounds”, “completing a task”, and “buried”) that could point to a future appearance of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Honestly, I don’t see it happening. I think Maul has bigger fish to fry, and his current goals lie with unlocking the Sith holocron for his own gain. For him to go searching for Obi-Wan takes the focus away from the Ghost crew—the main characters of the series. That said, we don’t know what the writers have up their sleeves.
Also, let’s not forget that Maul did try to take over Mandalore. Sabine somehow gets her hands on the darksaber he had won in a fight against Pre Vizsla. What anger and hatred might he still harbor for Mandalore and its people? We’ll have to wait and see!
“A methodical, tactical genius, Grand Admiral Thrawn is summoned by Governor Pryce to bring an end to the growing rebel threat. Thrawn is coldly analytical, and values information above everything else. The only officer in the Imperial fleet of Chiss descent, Thrawn earned his position through decisive victories where he used his brilliant mind to thoroughly outmaneuver his enemies.”
Moving from Legends to canon, Thrawn is the character most people are looking forward to seeing in the new season. Personally, I’m not at all interested in the character, so the thing I look forward to seeing the most is how his methods affect the Ghost crew. His actions will undoubtedly make things harder for the team to operate against the Empire, so those are the moments concerning Thrawn that have my attention.
Star Wars Rebels season three will premiere on Saturday, September 24, at 8:30 PM EST on Disney XD.
