New ‘Star Wars Rebels’ Promo Shows the Might of the Empire

New footage and dialogue appear in the latest Star Wars Rebels season three promo. The 30-second video gave us another taste of what’s to come, and it doesn’t look good for the rebels. The promo successfully reminded us that the Empire is truly an overwhelming force and that the rebels are going to have a rough third season with Grand Admiral Thrawn and Maul in their way.

The promo opens with a shot of Grand Admiral Thrawn observing a distant city. Where is he? Why is there an explosion? Fans were quick to figure out that the planet he’s on is Ryloth, a planet that has resisted foreign occupation for decades.

We also saw the return of Cham Syndulla and his freedom fighters in the season three trailer earlier this summer. In the trailer, Cham said, “The Empire is getting better at anticipating our moves. I underestimated the Commander. Previous attacks were clumsy, but this one was swift. Precise.”

We know Thrawn has been given the task of eliminating the rebel threat, which also includes the resistance on Ryloth. However, I also find interesting the idea that Thrawn is attacking the Ghost crew at the source. We saw him have an open gallery of images relating to the Ghost crew. In it, we saw an image of younger Hera and her parents, Sabine’s art, and several other key pieces of information. That said, Thrawn could be drawing the Ghost crew out by attacking the homes and people they care about the most.

This was definitely my favorite moment in the promo. At first, I made the mistake of stating that this scene featured the production of TIE fighters. However, Jordan Maison of Cinelinx pointed out that these are, in fact, cockpit simulators.

In the foreground, we see four individuals: 1 female TIE fighter pilot, an officer, and two male pilots. Many, including myself, have suspected that the female character could be Sabine in her undercover mission. The other two pilots could be Wedge Antilles and the other pilot we saw in the season three trailer.

I find this scene to be very fascinating, since it goes into the inner workings of Imperial training. It also reminds me of “Breaking Ranks” in season one, where Ezra was the one to go undercover.

Something that really stood out to me in this promo was Thrawn standing with his back to us and his attention on the scene in front of him. It really emphasizes the fact that he is the type of individual who studies and analyzes the information presented to him.

Since his gaze and attention is so focused on Sabine’s artwork, I wonder if Thrawn will play a part in the Mandalorian story line that’s tied to her. Personally, I hope he doesn’t, since I want to focus more on Sabine and the current state of Mandalorian culture and less on the Chiss strategist who’s determined to take down the rebels.

Finally, we get a clearer shot of Kanan and what is, undoubtedly, Nigthsister magic giving him the ability to see. Our TWG contributor, Elisa, was perusing through the Son of Dathomir comics and re-discovered that Count Dooku had also been possessed by a green mystical force. So it begs a couple of questions. Is Kanan in control of his own actions? Or is someone controlling him for their own gain? Only time will tell!

Star Wars Rebels season three premieres on September 24, 2016, at 8:30 PM EST on Disney XD.

  1. Do you think the male TIE fighter pilot in the middle of that shot overlooking the TIES could be Baron Valen Rudor?

    • You know, I was also thinking that! My friend and I would love to see that character again, so we’re kind of hoping that’s him, hehe!
