Captain Rex Faces the Enemies of His Past in “The Last Battle”

Battle droids. Super tactical droids. Proton bombs. The next all-new episode of Star Wars Rebels takes fans back to a time before the Empire, when the galaxy was divided between the Republic and Separatists.

The Ghost crew head to an old abandoned base in the search of arms and artillery for the Rebellion. Captain Rex joins them and gets a blast from the past when he, Ezra, Kanan, and Zeb are captured by a unit of old battle droids determined to fight one last battle to officially end the Clone War.

Nothing gets me more excited than seeing Captain Rex in his element. As established in season two, he is a vital resource to the rebels. Not only does he have the tactical skills and strategic experience, but he also has knowledge of hidden locations and bases that could still prove useful to the Rebel Alliance.

What I love most about this clip is Ezra’s curiosity. He was born right when the war ended and the Empire rose from its ashes. He’s never seen a battle droid in person and he’s only ever heard bits and pieces of what came before. For him to confirm what little knowledge he knows, not only does that reemphasize the fact that he’s curious, but he’s also asking the kinds of questions younger viewers in the audience would also ask, especially if their entry point into Star Wars is Rebels and not the movies or The Clone Wars.

Well, just break my heart. You could almost feel the cold prickling anxiety take over at seeing Rex experiencing what most people would call a nightmare. The sounds of war in the background and him calling out Cody’s name with urgency are also pretty much a punch to the gut. Upon realizing that it was all in his head, Rex almost sounds . . . relieved.

The thing I love most about this clip: Kanan calling Rex “buddy”. Let’s not forget that Kanan is wearing a pair of Jaig eyes on his mask, symbolizing the growing friendship between him and Rex. They’re also survivors of the Clone War. I can’t wait to see how they plan to get themselves out of this unfortunate situation.

It’s also interesting to see the return of Kalani, the super tactical droid that served Count Dooku during the Battle of Onderon in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. After continued resistance by the Onderonians, Dooku ordered Kalani to abandon the planet and relocate to Agamar. I love it when loose threads like this are tied up with another story.

A good leader knows when to step back and allow someone who is more knowledgeable and more skillful to take the lead and that’s exactly what we see happen between Kanan and Rex.

Also, poor Zeb. It looks like he’s the bait again, so here’s hoping everyone (especially Rex) comes out of this ordeal alive and in one piece. Even though the title gives people the impression that this is going to be Rex’s last battle, I don’t think that means the writers are going to kill him off. I think he’s going to feel a sense of closure that he didn’t get when he escaped Order 66.

“The Last Battle” airs Saturday, October 22, at 8:30PM EST on Disney XD.
