Sabine Returns to Her Homeworld In “Legacy of Mandalore”

Sabine and the gang are finally back after a long 5-week break that started after “Trials of the Darksaber.” Although we weren’t left with a massive cliffhanger, we have been stuck wondering what’s the next step in Sabine’s journey to uniting the Mandalorian clans. We’ll finally get our follow-up to that story in “Legacy of Mandalore,” where Sabine hopes to enlist her family to help the Rebellion. In order to do that, Sabine returns to her homeworld with Kanan, Ezra, and Fenn Rau at her side. She soon, however, finds herself embroiled in her family’s power struggle for Mandalore.

Prior to the hiatus, we were left with one preview clip in the Rebels Recon episode of “Trials of the Darksaber.” In it, the crew experience heavy fire from incoming Mandalorian warriors, but in the latest clip, Sabine and the others manage to land safely enough for her to present the darksaber to her mother.

First off, it’s truly exciting to see Sabine’s mother in the flesh. She’s been mentioned a few times during the Mandalorian-centered episodes, but in “Imperial Supercommandos,” Sabine told Gar Saxon, “I doubt you gave her much choice, traitor,” when Saxon said that her mother now stands with him and the Empire. That one line led me to believe that her mother might have been coerced to align herself with the Empire. In “Trials of the Darksaber,” however, Sabine goes on to explain that her entire family turned their backs on her. Still, part of me yearns to see a mother longing to see her daughter. That’s not exactly what we get in this new clip. Instead, her mother is quick to shackle her up with no hesitation. Personally, I hope Sabine’s mom changes her perspective by the end of the episode because I’d love to see a healthy and supportive mother-daughter relationship on screen. Also, here’s hoping Sabine’s mom gets a name because Hera’s mom definitely doesn’t have one (as far as we know) and that’s a real shame.

In term of predictions, given that the darksaber is being used as a way to round up the Mandalorian clans, it wouldn’t make sense for Sabine to leave the ancient weapon with her mother. Sabine is the one who’s meant to wield it. As a result, I believe the writers are going to change things up and have Sabine stay behind with her family. I don’t think she’ll stay out of the main story for too long, however, since the season will ultimately end with Grand Admiral Thrawn discovering the Rebel base on Atollon. Phoenix Squadron will need forces to fight off Thrawn. According to the season finale description, “Ezra attempts to rally help from an unexpected source.” Could this source be Sabine and the Mandalorian forces? If so, that would be one epic battle against the Empire.
