March’s Topic: Most Emotional Scene
To me, the most emotional scenes that have come out of Star Wars aren’t the iconic moments portrayed in the films. To be honest, I’ve never shed a tear while watching the saga films, not even when a main character perished in The Force Awakens. Instead, the scenes that have made me weep and ache come from the television shows, specifically Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Powerfully written, exquisitely animated, and wrapped up in beautifully composed music, these scenes have broken my heart several times over. I couldn’t just choose one because all three affected characters who are near and dear to my heart, and as a result, they all had the same emotional impact on me.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars did something that the movies never could and that was expanding on the individual personalities of the clone troopers. The Umbara arc took that and gave you a character, Pong Krell, who couldn’t care less about their individuality and wellbeing. Not only were Captain Rex and the rest of the clones treated disrespectfully, but Krell turned them against each other, making each side believe they were fighting against the enemy. Rex realized the truth and put himself in the line of fire to stop the massacre—brother had been fighting against brother. Waxer was one of the many casualties in this arc, and till this day, merely thinking about that scene brings me to tears.
Ahsoka has always been a favorite character of mine, right from the beginning. She was eager to learn, rough around the edges, and had no problem making her voice heard. Over the course of the show, she started to grow on the audience and many wanted to desperately know what would happen to Ahsoka by the time Order 66 rolled around. The creative team had something different in mind, and at the end of season five, Ahsoka exited the show. She felt betrayed by the people who she had trusted the most, forcing her to carve out a new path for herself. As she left, she cried and we cried with her. Ahsoka’s theme played in the background as she walked off into the sunset and the song continued playing into the credits. I’ve tried getting through those final moments without crying and failed miserably every time.
Season Two Finale
Like its predecessor, Star Wars Rebels has also given fans some of the best visuals, music, and storytelling in recent years. The season two finale was no exception. While the Ahsoka vs. Darth Vader battle was intense and emotional, what hit me the most was what came after. Kevin Kiner is a master at his craft and those last few minutes with Vader walking away, Ahsoka’s figure disappearing into the dark, the sweeping movement through the Ghost before pausing on Kanan’s new condition, and it ending on Ezra opening that Sith holocron, I still get the chills thinking about it. It is, without a doubt, a masterpiece. That whole sequence is so ingrained in my mind, and even after committing it to memory, my heart still aches. I can only imagine what the creators have in store for us when it comes to the final moments of the series, but if it’s anywhere near as moving as that season two ending, then we’re in for another whirlwind of emotions.
