Fan Artist Spotlight: Ryan van der Meer

Today’s fan artist spotlight is on Ryan van der Meer, an artist from Australia and a huge Star Wars fan. Ryan was featured as a fan artist in the past, and you can read more about his thoughts here.

“I became a fan when I was first introduced to [A New Hope] by my mum when I was in primary school,” he said, when introducing himself. “We had it recorded on a tape as it was playing on TV, but I was little and had to go to bed when it came on, so when I woke up Saturday morning, my eyes were treated to the sights of stormtroopers and lightsabers. It was unlike anything I had ever seen before, and I’ve loved it ever since.”

On creating fan art and the popularity of fan art:

I’ve been drawing all my life, and drawing Star Wars since I started watching it. I think fan art of Star Wars in particular is so popular because it’s a way of expressing our love for certain characters and moments from the saga.

On the tools he uses:

I usually use polychromo penicls or prismacolour pencils for coloured works, and graphite pencils for monochrome work.

On their favorite Star Wars drawing:

My favourite piece I have created is the black-and-white one featured [below], because it was a fun challenge trying to encapsulate the entire saga.

On the difficulties of being an artist:

The most difficult thing about being an artist is trying to be able to have your own work stand out from the amazing talent of others. However, anyone who wants to give it a go ought to practice and persist as much as possible!

His thoughts on Star Wars Rebels:

I love Star Wars Rebels and eagerly await to see how season 4 will tie in with Rogue One and the greater Star Wars universe in general. Being able to see the Ghost crew and characters like Ahsoka, Rex, Hondo, and Anakin/Vader come back to us has been a real treat as a fan.

His thoughts on the future Star Wars films:

I’m looking forward to The Last Jedi. It looks to me to be a much fresher take on the galaxy far, far away than what The Force Awakens offered us.
