It’s been one week since the extended sneak peek trailer of Star Wars Resistance was released on YouTube, and while we’re days away from the series premiere, it didn’t feel right letting this trailer slip away from our analytic lens.
Since the trailer’s debut, there have been several new developments here at TWG. We announced earlier this week that we will be exclusively revealing new Star Wars Resistance photos from Star Wars Authentics every week. We also published our latest episode of Geeky Bubble, where we interviewed Mark Von Ohlen from The Topps Company. Last but not least, we published two versions of our interview with the executive producers and cast of Star Wars Resistance here on TWG and over at Culturess.
Needless to say, it’s been a busy week.
All that said, here is our closer look at the Star Wars Resistance extended sneak peek trailer. Some thoughts will be more analytical, while others will be simple observations. We hope you’ll participate along the way and leave comments of your own.
It looks like the characters won’t be spending all of their time on the Colossus. Kaz appears to be in a X-wing cockpit and BB-8 is sitting on top as his companion droid. It’ll be great to see Kaz and Poe work together, especially as Kaz gathers more intel about the First Order.
The best way to enjoy this show is to accept that it’s aimed at children and that it’s going to have childlike humor. As someone who enjoys that kind of humor, I love moments like this, where Kaz is surreptitiously hiding in a crate with BB-8. It’s cute, it’s funny, and you just have to go along with it.
So many different kinds of non-humans! It’s so pleasing to see such a variety from the old trilogy, the prequels, and the sequels all in one scene.
I like that BB-8 plays a role in this series and that he’s not just a guest appearance. He’s endearing, brave, and adds so much personality to every scene he’s in. He’s also small enough where he won’t steal too much focus from the new characters, whereas someone like Ahsoka will take the spotlight.
This has been out in the Twitter world for several weeks now, but the red TIE fighter pilot is Major Vonreg. He’ll be voiced by Lex Lang. He and Kaz appear to be on the Colossus mainly because of the following screencap.
It looks like Torra catches Kaz sneaking around. It’ll be interesting to find out if Torra discovers Kaz’s secret undercover mission. I can see him needing a friend on the inside with top access and Torra seems like the way to go when it comes to getting the intel he needs.
Not only is Torra a phenomenal pilot, but she also has a collection of plush toys and I love her (and the Resistance creative team) for it.
I know a lot of people are excited about Hype Fazon, but he also has that in-your-face kind of personality that seems to try the patience of the other racers. Even Bo Keevil looks like he’s annoyed by Hype’s antics.
I am so happy the Colossus is located in the middle of the ocean because things like this get to happen. The writers are actually using the environment to cause problems for the locals. Oftentimes, the attack comes from space, but it’ll be interesting to see the attack come from the vast ocean floor instead.
The sea creature also reminds me of the joopa in Star Wars Rebels.
Here’s another detail I’m excited to see: space pirates! We’ve seen pirates before with Hondo Ohnaka and his gang in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, but these pirates look like they come straight out of Mad Max: Fury Road. They’re wild, crazy, and ready to wreak havoc.
It’s too early in the show to start this, but I will say I like the idea of the Tam/Kaz ship. He’s tall, goofy, and comes from money. She’s short, no nonsense, and she’s had to work hard for what she wants. That makes for a pretty good pairing in my eyes.
A neimoidian! The past Star Wars animated shows have done a fantastic job at incorporating humanoid species (better than the movies, in my opinion), but what Star Wars Resistance is able to do in the first couple of episodes so far is truly impressive.
It blows my mind how concept artists at Lucasfilm have unlimited quantities of imagination and are able to create new droids that are just as lovable as the ones we’ve seen in the past. Also, the one on the far right would make a great cosplay for children.
It’s fascinating how they’re including Starkiller Base so early on in the series. Then again, it makes sense not to hide the fact it exists at this point in time, since the series takes place 6 months before the events in The Force Awakens. Also, this plot line reminds me of the Ghost crew and Saw Gerrera trying to look for answers about the Death Star.
I get the feeling this was a Starkiller Base prototype, where the First Order might have been testing the technology before fully implementing it someplace else.
A gold trooper is not something I thought we would ever see. Then again, I thought the same thing about a chrome trooper. At first I thought the idea was strange, but then I remembered the First Order operates on extremes. This is an example of that.
Some people think this guy is a Lasat. Others believe he’s a Hassk. I don’t really know for sure, but I do know that Tam can certainly handle herself in a predicament. It’s also interesting how this pirate has Imperial rank badges decorating his armor. It makes sense that pirates would steal from the Empire when it started crumbling 30 years ago.
Bobby Moynihan mentioned in the press day interviews that this adorable critter is called a gorg. Turns out, we’ve seen and heard of this little creature before. As for the two children in the background, we’ve seen concept art of them in the Team Fireball featurette, so I look forward to learning more about them.
I have to admit, I’m not a huge fan of Captain Phasma. For one, she’s part of the First Order. And second, I just don’t find her that interesting. I know a novel exists about her, but I don’t feel compelled enough to read it. Here’s hoping Resistance can change my thoughts about her.
So on top of being a phenomenal pilot and having an adorable plush collection, Torra can also do acrobatics and dodge shots with finesse. Talk about amazing!
We finally get a better look at the blond guy riding with Kaz along the water. He kind of reminds me of a young Luke Skywalker.
I wonder if Kowakian monkey-lizards are just mischievous in nature. I don’t think we’ve seen a good-natured one before and it looks like we won’t see that here. This one looks like it’s on a mission to torment Kaz.
