Note: This article contains heavy spoilers for the season finale.
io9’s Germain Lussier recently spoke with one of the executive producers of Star Wars Resistance, Justin Ridge, about the season finale, Kaz’s reaction to losing his home, the timeline with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and much more.
The finale ended in a surprising way, sending the main characters across space into unknown territory. Many of us have thought about whether the series will show us what the timeline will look like after Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but Ridge simply said, “That’s an interesting observation. We’ll have to wait and see.”
With the characters embarking on this brand-new adventure, there’s no doubt some of them will think back to the events that took place in the season finale, like Kaz seeing the destruction of his home. How will he cope with that knowledge and loss now that things have calmed down?
“[Losing his family is] definitely something that Kaz has to deal with. It’s such a huge event and really such a devastating thing that happened. We’ll definitely see how Kaz handles it.” Personally, we’re hoping our theory about Kaz’s father comes true, since that would set up some interesting drama and conflict between the characters later on.
Finally, while we had fun following Kaz’s story throughout the season, there were times when we didn’t see some of the characters as often as we would have liked. Take, for example, the ace pilots. We saw them in action from time to time, but we don’t really know much about them. Fortunately, Ridge had some good news in regards to the ace pilots moving forward.
“They definitely will play a bigger part in season two,” he said. “It’s tricky. We have a lot of characters on this station and in our story so to give everyone equal screen time is kind of impossible. So when we write these stories we just organically want to make sure that it feels right and that we’re telling the right story. And sometimes we don’t get to see as much of the Aces as we’d like but you’ll definitely see them in season two.”
