Exciting things are on the horizon for fans of the Emmy Award nominated series Star Wars Resistance, including the release of the first season on DVD.
The complete first season DVD of Star Wars Resistance will include bonus features, such as a special look at the past, present, and future of the series with supervising director Justin Ridge and the cast in a segment called “Path of Resistance” as well as cast audio commentaries of the following episodes with Christopher Sean (Kazuda Xiono), Myrna Velasco (Torra Doza), Scott Lawrence (Jarek Yeager), and Josh Brener (Neeku Vozo):
The DVD will also include the 12 animated bonus shorts that were released during the 2018-2019 holiday break as well as every episode of Resistance Rewind.
That said, some fans are surprised by the lack of a Blu-ray announcement.
There aren’t any concrete answers as to why there isn’t a Blu-ray release, but this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this happen. Last year, Lucasfilm and Disney released the second season of LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures only on DVD, even though the first season exists on DVD and Blu-ray.
Even some of Disney’s popular television films and shows, such as Descendants and Tangled: The Series were only released on DVD.
In fact, if you check the “2019 in home video” releases chart on Wikipedia, you’ll find 66% of known home video releases coming out this year will only be available on DVD. This number also includes all major studios, like Disney, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, and 20th Century Fox, just to name a few.
In 2018 and 2017, those numbers were 77% and 78%, respectively. That’s a lot of DVD-only releases in an age where people are looking for the highest quality picture.
Not only that, but the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) reported earlier in March how physical media sales had a dramatic 50% drop in the last 5 years. Additionally, while popular with some collectors, 4K Ultra HD only made up 5.3% of physical disc sales. The report also confirmed how DVDs still make up about 60% of all disc sales worldwide. Add to that the increase in streaming and digital sales, and you’ve got a situation in which studios go straight to less costly and more profitable methods.
Of the 57 known Disney home video releases for film and television shows this year (this includes Resistance, even though the Wikipedia chart hasn’t been updated), 6 of them are television shows and each one will be released only on DVD. The only 2 Disney films without a Blu-ray release are the live-action Kim Possible and Descendants 3.
Given home video release trends and physical media sales, it doesn’t look like a Star Wars Resistance Blu-ray release is in the cards.
For those still looking to enjoy what Lucasfilm Animation has to offer, even if it comes packaged in a DVD, here’s where you can pre-order:
